About The Artist
MORRIS CRITCHLOW
|
I have been an avid woodworker since developing an interest in woodworking
during college. I am an electrical engineer and have worked in heavy industry
since 1980. My engineering background carries over into my designs. I
incorporate design and joinery techniques that allow a piece to last for
generations. Wood is an organic material that changes dimensionally with the
weather. My designs allow for that movement while retaining precise fit and
natural beauty.
I primarily use North American hardwoods, such as walnut, maple, and cherry. I
especially like highly figured woods like curly cherry, birdseye maple, quilted
maple, curly maple, and walnut burl. Other woods come from all over the world
but only woods which originate from areas practicing responsible conservation
and reforestation are used.
I use dyes and stains sparingly and only to accentuate the natural beauty of
figured wood or to provide detail on trim. All other wood is finished in its natural
state.
When designing a box I choose the best wood for each part, focusing on color,
size and especially grain pattern and figure.
Custom orders are welcome. If you like a particular item and want it customized
or modified, or if you want to create a design to suit your specific needs,
contact me with your ideas and I can prepare a quotation. A custom box order
usually takes six to ten weeks to complete. Larger custom pieces may require
more time, depending on the size and complexity.
